Morgan Rogers has already given his verdict on Enzo Maresca as Chelsea eye move for Aston Villa star

Aston Villa attacking midfielder Morgan Rogers could be set for a reunion with Enzo Maresca at Chelsea.

Chelsea have identified Rogers as a target for the summer transfer window, with the 22-year-old being a player who has worked under Maresca before.

The Chelsea boss coached Rogers when the two were part of Manchester City’s academy set-up, and the English youngster has gone on to develop into one of the Premier League‘s most talented attackers since then.

Rogers has now caught the Blues’ attention, and it looks like he would have no issue with playing under Maresca again.

Morgan Rogers learnt a lot working with Enzo Maresca

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill is a fan of Maresca, and his England teammate Rogers seems to be as well.

While the Villa star did not play too many games under Maresca, he still took a lot away from working with him and believes the Italian can get the best out of a footballer.

In an interview with The Athletic last year, Rogers said: “I didn’t play a lot under him but I did train under him. He had the perfect mix of getting the best out of players while within that structure. I learned a lot.”

It is now Unai Emery who is getting the best out of Rogers, who is having a fantastic season with Villa.

In 33 Premier League appearances, the England international has scored eight goals and provided eight assists. He also made a significant contribution to Villa’s run to the Champions League quarter-finals, where they were narrowly knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain.

Morgan Rogers’ 2024/25 stats Appearances Goals Assists
Premier League 33 8 8
Champions League 12 4 2
FA Cup 5 2 1
Total 50 14 11

It is easy to see, then, why Chelsea are interested in Rogers, though he is not the only attacker the Blues are currently looking at. Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams is also a target for Chelsea, for example, but his wages could be a problem.

Morgan Rogers on Moises Caicedo

If Rogers does go on to join Chelsea, he will not have to face Moises Caicedo again, something that is likely to delight the former Middlesbrough man.

There was one game where in Rogers’ own words, he simply “couldn’t get past him”.

When Rogers spoke about his encounters against Caicedo earlier this month, he said: “I didn’t play against him much this year because of positions we played. Last year, played him at home, he’s quick, strong. I’ll be honest, I couldn’t get past him.”

In the 2025/26 Premier League season, the two could be playing alongside each other.
