What Enzo Maresca really wants on deadline day as two Chelsea deals expected to be completed - journalist

Chelsea are having to work to the unusual parameters of having the summer transfer window temporarily close around the time they get their Club World Cup campaign underway.

The first deadline is at 7pm on Tuesday, in order for clubs competing in the United States to complete any deals they want in place before the competition gets underway.

Liam Delap is travelling to America after his signing has already been unveiled, however it looks as if the Blues are hoping for that not to be the end of their early business.

A new attacker is high on their shortlist for the summer, with Jamie Gittens coming out as the club’s preferred target.

Chelsea have bid again for Gittens over the weekend, and are believed to be in a good position to complete the signing.

Enzo Maresca wants Chelsea to sign Mike Maignan on deadline day

They are also very keen on confirming the signing of Mike Maignan from AC Milan. The Blues are looking to pounce on the goalkeeper’s contract coming to an end in the next 12 months.

Graeme Bailey has exclusively told The Chelsea Chronicle that Chelsea are planning to have both players in their squad for the Club World Cup, and expect both deals to be confirmed before Tuesday’s deadline.

He said: “I believe Chelsea are moving forward with Maignan and Gittens, they have done most of the work on both deals over the weekend. Chelsea have almost threatened Milan that they will walk away from deal if not agreed by Tuesday.

“In theory they might, but Maignan has agreed terms and Enzo Maresca really wants him. Chelsea are planning to have both Maignan and Gittens in their CWC squad.

“I am told Chelsea are very happy with how things are panning out with their squad, with Liam Delap already in place.”

Potential Chelsea sales after Maignan and Gittens signings

Both players would be expecting to become starters at Stamford Bridge should they make the move, and this could see some important first team stars from last season to move on later this summer.

Maresca has lost faith in Robert Sanchez, and he could easily be moved on should a sufficient offer come in for his services later in the transfer window.

With Estevao Willian also joining the first team squad, the wingers at the club will also be concerned at how secure their future is in West London.

Pedro Neto is wanted in Saudi Arabia, while Newcastle have retained their interest in signing Noni Madueke after his vastly improved campaign on both wings.
