'Will need time': Enzo Maresca warns Chelsea fans two of his stars may not be ready for Club World Cup

While not everyone may be enthused about it, Chelsea supporters have good reason to be excited about the Club World Cup.

They should get an opportunity to see their new signings play, including Liam Delap, Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr.

Andrey Santos is also likely to make his competitive debut for Chelsea after an impressive season out on loan at Strasbourg. Barcelona scouts wanted Santos before his move to west London, so the midfielder is starting to look like a real steal for Chelsea.

Maresca, though, is being very cautious with two new faces who have recently joined the first-team squad.

Enzo Maresca claims Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr need time

While they have secured big moves to Chelsea, Essugo is only 20 years of age, while Sarr is still 19.

From Maresca’s point of view, they need to be given time, meaning that their minutes at the Club World Cup may be limited.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport‘s In the Box podcast about Essugo, Sarr and Delap, the Chelsea manager said: “They are three talents. I trained Delap in the Under 21s of City: he already has experience of the Premier League, he was relegated with Ipswich but he scored 12 goals. And he is a strong guy.

“The other two will need time: they are both born in 2005, we will have to understand when they will be ready but in perspective they are very strong players.”

Chelsea have plenty of options in midfield and defence, so there is no reason for Maresca to throw Essugo and Sarr straight into the action.

Santos, Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Romeo Lavia and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall can all play in the middle. At the back, Maresca has Levi Colwill, Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo and Benoit Badiashile for the centre-half positions.

Lavia helped convince Sarr to join Chelsea, but the Frenchman will have to bide his time, it seems, before starting games in the same team as the Belgian.

The big sign that Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr will be part of first team next season

Even though Essugo and Sarr are both still quite young and need to be shown patience, at this stage it would be a surprise if they were not part of Chelsea’s first-team squad next term.

They have already been included in their Club World Cup squad and have been given shirt numbers, low numbers, too. Essugo will wear the No.14 jersey, while Sarr has been given the No.19 shirt.
