Chelsea chiefs have changed their mind on £40m player they were desperate to sell 12 months ago - journalist
Enzo Maresca has now had a year to get to grips with the Chelsea squad, and will now have a clearer picture of who he sees as part of his long-term plans at the club.
The Italian enjoyed a very successful first campaign at Stamford Bridge, bringing home two trophies including the Club World Cup.
Maresca gave an indicator of some of those who were not in this thinking with his team selection for the trip to the United States.
Only Andrey Santos who had spent last season on loan were included in the squad, meaning there was no room for the likes of Djordje Petrovic, Renato Veiga and Axel Disasi to pick up a winner’s medal.

Chelsea chiefs change their mind on selling Trevoh Chalobah
One player who ended up playing a crucial role in both finals Chelsea played in was Trevoh Chalobah. The Cobham graduate started both games, with Maresca clearly trusting him in the big occasions.
A year ago, it looked very unlikely that he would ever play for Chelsea again. Chalobah was frozen out by the first team, and spent the first half of the season on loan at Crystal Palace.
Even after his January return, it felt unlikely that he had a long-term future at Stamford Bridge, however it looks as if his situation has now changed.
Matt Law told the ‘London is Blue’ podcast that Chelsea are no longer encouraging sides to bid for Chalobah, with him a far better established player after his six months back at the club.
He said: “It is a lot different than previously. They’re certainly not putting him around. They’re certainly not saying he’s for sale. They’re certainly not encouraging bids.”
Why Chelsea are changing their mind on Chalobah
While Chalobah’s performances on the pitch will have played a part in the club gaining more faith in him, it is not the only factor at play.
The club have been impressed with Chalobah’s conduct at times he was clearly not in the thinking at Stamford Bridge, and how this did not deter him from giving his best for the club.
If Chelsea are to part ways with any defenders this summer, it is likely to be Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile.
Despite the latter personally claiming he would love to stay at the club, Chelsea are exploring the possibility to sell Badiashile this summer.
