Report: Chelsea move ahead of Liverpool in race for £40m star Virgil Van Dijk has endorsed, talks now ‘ongoing’

Chelsea have moved ahead of two Premier League rivals in the race to sign a £40m player this summer.

Now that the Club World Cup tournament is over, which finished with Chelsea thrashing Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final to clinch the trophy, Blues fans may spend the next few weeks engrossed in transfer speculation while the players enjoy their pre-season break.

It won’t surprise any supporter if it’s a busy time at Stamford Bridge for ins and outs.

In terms of potential new recruits for Enzo Maresca’s side, they are tipped to be lining up some more additions after adding the likes of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap already this summer. In fact, Chelsea want to keep attacking the transfer market by discussing new options.

Chelsea advantage in Jorrel Hato pursuit

Ajax defender Jorrel Hato, 19, has emerged as a potential transfer target for the Blues in recent rumours. It was claimed earlier this week that Chelsea have held fresh talks about signing Hato, who’s a versatile defender that can cover both left-back and centre-half.

The latest update is that Maresca’s side have the edge over both Liverpool and Arsenal in the race for the Dutch teenager.

According to GiveMeSport, Chelsea have pushed ahead with their attempt to sign Hato by opening talks with Ajax.

Apparently, the Dutch giants have set an asking price of £60m for the defender, but the Blues think it will be realistic to sign him for closer to £40m. The player himself is open to a move to the Premier League this summer, too.

The report explains that Arsenal had been keen on signing Hato, but their interest has now cooled because they are set to land Valencia’s Cristhian Mosquera. Also, even though Liverpool are still keen on the Ajax academy graduate, it’s Chelsea that have made the first move.

Chelsea admire Hato’s versatility to play multiple defensive positions, so it feels like he would be a great addition to the squad if they win this transfer pursuit for a youngster with a lot of experience under his belt already.

Virgil van Dijk rates Jorrel Hato

Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, 34, is certainly one of the top central defenders of his era. Therefore, it’s interesting to hear that he hugely admires Chelsea target Hato.

Speaking via his YouTube channel, journalist Lewis Steele reported in June: “From what I’ve been told Virgil van Dijk is a huge fan of Hato. Good sources in Holland tell me he absolutely adores Hato and thinks he’s the best youngster to come out of Holland in a defensive sense for some years.”

Of course, Van Dijk does have some inside information on Hato after playing alongside him with the Dutch national team. In fact, he was on the pitch when the Ajax youngster was sent off back in March during a Nations League match against Spain.

Even though Van Dijk massively rates Hato, who’s on the Liverpool radar, Chelsea could beat them to him.
