‘Huge’: Steve Sidwell says Chelsea can win the PL title if they sign £26m star

Former Blues midfielder Steve Sidwell has named the one signing Chelsea should make that would turn them into serious challengers for the Premier League title.

Chelsea were not in the picture for the title race during the 2024/25 season. In fact, Enzo Maresca’s side only sneaked into fourth position to secure Champions League qualification on the final day.

However, it feels like there’s a lot more expectation on the Blues going into the 2025/26 campaign, largely because of how they won the Club World Cup in style during the summer.

Bayer Leverkusen manager Erik ten Hag thinks Chelsea can win the Premier League after facing them in a pre-season friendly. Meanwhile, Tony Cascarino backs Chelsea to challenge for the Premier League title with their talented young squad.

Steve Sidwell claims Gianluigi Donnarumma makes Chelsea title challengers

Jamie Carragher doesn’t think Chelsea will win the Premier League until they replace Robert Sanchez as their first-choice goalkeeper. Therefore, it’s fascinating to hear transfer rumours linking them with a move for Paris Saint-Germain shot-stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

According to Steve Sidwell, Donnarumma is the type of signing at Stamford Bridge that would make the Blues compete for the league crown.

When asked who needs Donnarumma the most out of Chelsea, Manchester City or Manchester United, Sidwell told Sky Sports Premier League: “I would say Chelsea. If Chelsea get him, they’ve got the biggest chance to win the Premier League title in a long time. What he did last season was absolutely incredible…

“I’ve seen [Robert] Sanchez when I was at Brighton, and I always had a question mark on him at Chelsea. I think if they get Donnarumma, it is huge, especially for the players in front of him – the defenders, the whole squad.”

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Donnarumma has said goodbye to the PSG supporters, even though he’s still under contract in the French capital for another year. It certainly sounds like his time in Paris is over, though.

The transfer latest on Gianluigi Donnarumma

The Mirror previously claimed that PSG will accept £26m for Donnarumma this summer, so will we see the high-profile gloveman moving to the Premier League before the transfer window shuts?

Apparently, Chelsea and Manchester United enquired about Donnarumma quite recently. Journalist Fabrice Hawkins reports via X that Manchester City are also in the transfer race, too.

Without a doubt, Donnarumma has established himself as one of the world’s best goalkeepers from his time with AC Milan and PSG, particularly because of his incredible shot-stopping ability.

From Chelsea’s perspective, we’re not totally convinced that Donnarumma is a massive upgrade on Sanchez when it comes to ball-playing qualities. We can’t deny that he’s an overall better keeper, though.
