Opta supercomputer predicts Chelsea’s chances of winning the Champions League ahead of Bayern Munich clash
Chelsea return to the Champions League next Wednesday with their first game against Bayern Munich, but what are their odds of winning the entire tournament?
The Blues are two-time Champions League winners and head into the tournament after their European and global success last season.
Enzo Maresca’s side won the Europa Conference League and the Club World Cup at the tail end of the 2024-25 campaign, and they are now aiming to thrive in Europe’s elite competition.
Chelsea will begin their campaign with an away trip against Bayern Munich on Wednesday, seeing former Blues forward Nicolas Jackson compete against them.
Chelsea have low odds of winning the Champions League
According to the Opta analyst supercomputer, Chelsea have a seven per cent chance of lifting the trophy at the end of the season, based on all the statistics available.
While that is a low number, it makes them the sixth favourites to win the Champions League in the eyes of the Opta supercomputer, with only Liverpool, Arsenal, PSG, Barcelona, and Manchester City ahead of them.
Chelsea will be stepping back into the Champions League for the first time in two seasons, and the fanbase is eager to see them compete at that level again.
The Blues will face eight teams in the league phase of the competition, which kicks off with a repeat of the 2011-12 Champions League final against Bayern Munich, where Didier Drogba famously won Chelsea the trophy.
Barcelona are the other team from pot one that Chelsea drew, and from pot two, they will play Benfica and Atalanta.
Chelsea drew Ajax and Napoli from pot three; meanwhile, they will also face Pafos and Qarabag, who are the opponents from pot four.
How far can Chelsea go in the Champions League?
The Champions League is going to provide a whole new experience for Chelsea this season, not only because this squad has entered the competition for the first time but also because the format has totally changed since they were last involved.
The Blues might be former winners, but they have no experience with the initial league format, which will test Chelsea against some of Europe’s elite teams from the start, all while they balance Premier League football.
However, the Opta analyst has given Maresca’s men a solid 51.3 per cent chance of reaching the quarter-finals stage, and a 28.5 per cent chance of going one step further than that by being in the semi-finals.
Chelsea have a 15 per cent chance of reaching the final, which then drops to seven per cent based on the odds of winning the silverware.
