Report: Chelsea already know they made a mistake selling academy star during summer transfer window

Chelsea’s mission to raise funds from selling players was highly successful during the summer transfer window, although they have had to act quickly after immediately realising a mistake had been made to let one individual leave.

The Blues were under pressure to sell following being sanctioned by UEFA for breaking financial rules, and had to sell in order to register their new signings for the upcoming Champions League campaign.

They were able to achieve this, although Facundo Buonanotte was not named in the squad after joining the club on loan late in the transfer window.

Chelsea made big money on the likes of Joao Felix and Noni Madueke, however the sale of Ishe Samuels-Smith to Strasbourg raised some eyebrows based on how highly he was rated during his time with the academy.

Chelsea know they made a mistake selling Ishe Samuels-Smith

Just weeks after permanently parting ways with the defender, Chelsea re-signed Samuels-Smith from their fellow BlueCo club, before sending him on loan to Swansea for the rest of the season.

The change of heart was equally shocking, and business between two clubs under the same ownership is always going to raise questions amongst supporters of other teams.

However, as per DNA, Chelsea have admitted they made a mistake in selling the youngster, whilst also sticking by the fact that the transfer was all above board.

It was reported last season that Chelsea had ‘high hopes’ for Samuels-Smith, however his pathway to any potential first team football has become more obscured following the club’s other transfer business.

Samuels-Smith would have been hoping to provide both cover and competition for Marc Cucurella in the Chelsea side following the departures of Renato Veiga and Ben Chilwell.

However, the Blues decided to look in another direction and bring in Jorrel Hato from Ajax, amid competition from fellow top Premier League clubs.

Hato could start his first Chelsea game following the international break, after Cucurella played every possible minute for Spain over the weekend.

Samuels-Smith will be pushing to make his Swansea debut at the weekend against Hull City in the Championship.
