Report: How Enzo Maresca truly feels about Chelsea squad amid poor form

Enzo Maresca has a very expensive squad, which Chelsea added to over the summer.

In the two transfer windows that have just passed, the Blues brought in the likes of Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens and Alejandro Garnacho.

Even so, Chelsea have really struggled in the Premier League of late. They have lost their last two fixtures, receiving red cards in both of them.

On top of red cards, Maresca has also had to deal with injuries. Chelsea could be without Pedro, Moises Caicedo and Andrey Santos for Tuesday night’s Champions League tie against Benfica, adding to Maresca’s woes.

Enzo Maresca doesn’t think Chelsea squad is good enough

Chelsea’s Champions League campaign is not going according to plan either, with Maresca’s men losing their league phase opener to Bayern Munich.

According to FourFourTwo, Maresca does not think his Chelsea squad is good enough to compete in both Europe’s elite competition and the Premier League.

Such a view is likely to disappoint Chelsea’s owners, who invested a lot of money into the team over the summer.

But with players injured and the club’s recent signings still quite young, many will feel that the Chelsea manager has a point.

Despite results, as of now, Maresca’s job is not in any danger. However, the Italian will need to pick up a win against Benfica following the loss to Bayern.

The two signings that would vastly improve Chelsea squad

Even with a fit squad, Chelsea are lacking a consistent centre-back with experience. They are also missing a world-class goalkeeper.

If the Club World Cup winners can address those two positions next year, it could transform the team.

Chelsea have recently been linked with Gleison Bremer, while summer target Mike Maignan remains on the club’s radar.

The Chelsea Chronicle understands that Chelsea are still keen on Maignan after failing to sign the AC Milan goalkeeper in the summer. They could be set to pick him up on a free transfer, as his contract expires in 2026.
