Why Robert Sanchez has only been given one-game ban despite straight red vs Manchester United

Robert Sanchez let Chelsea down on Saturday after receiving a straight red card in his side’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United.

However, the goalkeeper will quickly get the chance to redeem himself in Chelsea‘s Premier League clash against Brighton & Hove Albion next weekend.

While Sanchez was handed a straight red card at Old Trafford, he will only have to serve a one-match ban in the Blues’ next domestic fixture, which is an away trip to Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

Sanchez’s dismissal saw Enzo Maresca make two early changes during his side’s defeat. Estevao Willian was sacrificed before Pedro Neto was also withdrawn, resulting in a loud roar from the frustrated winger.

Robert Sanchez sent off for denying ‘goalscoring opportunity’ in Chelsea’s defeat to Manchester United

A red card normally carries a three-match suspension with it, but Sanchez’s ejection from the game was not the result of violent conduct.

The 27-year-old was dismissed for denying a “goalscoring opportunity”, according to the Premier League.

As a result, Sanchez will only have to serve a one-game ban, meaning that he will be available again next Saturday.

There is no doubt that Sanchez is one of the losers from Chelsea’s loss to United, but his replacement Filip Jorgensen did not look entirely convincing during the game either.

It means that Maresca is likely to switch back to his first-choice goalkeeper as soon as his suspension is over.

In the summer, it was claimed that Jorgensen was unhappy at Chelsea because of his role as deputy to Sanchez.

Robert Sanchez issues apology

As most footballers do in this day and age, Sanchez was quick to take to social media to apologise for his role in Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat.

On his Instagram story, he posted: “On me today guys, big sorry for that, team put a massive effort in [in] the second half but couldn’t get there.”

Following the Club World Cup winners’ previous loss, which came against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, Joe Cole talked up Sanchez. But after his latest howler, he is bound to receive a wave of criticism in the coming days.
