Former Premier League striker now admits Liverpool actually tried to sell him to Chelsea

Chelsea have had mixed luck when it comes to signing big-name strikers in modern times, with some not reaching the standards those before them have set.

Didier Drogba is normally the measuring stick for any strikers signed by the club, with him one of the few members of the ‘Premier League 100 club’ to have ever played for the Blues.

Gary Lineker has tipped Liam Delap to succeed in Drogba’s wake, with him still building up full fitness after his prolonged injury to start to the season.

The likes of Fernando Torres, Andriy Shevchenko and Alvaro Morata have all been signed for big money, but their time at Stamford Bridge will not go down in the history books for positive reasons.

One striker who is positively thought of by Premier League fans is Robbie Fowler, with him spending the majority of his prime years at Liverpool.

Despite eight years at Anfield, Fowler has now revealed that Liverpool actually considered selling him to a number of clubs before he left, one of those being Chelsea.

He said: “No, I think when I left, obviously on my terms, and look, I don’t even think this is a common knowledge, but the club had tried to sell me a few times. You know, and so it’s one of them. So this is where when you talk about loyalty in football and players are not loyal, sometimes it’s the other way round as well.

“So clubs for me is not loyal. So I just felt, you know what, they tried to sell me, I think to Newcastle, Villa and Chelsea.”

Fowler left Liverpool in 2001, the year after the Blues had signed Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, and the potential combination of those two up front is a serious prospect.

Fowler’s interesting drought against Chelsea

Despite being one of the best strikers in Premier League history, there was certainly a time period where he would struggle against Chelsea.

Fowler had five strikes against the Blues by the end of 1997, however failed to score in the next 13 times he was on the pitch against them.

These came across his time at Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester City and Blackburn, and the story of him potentially being on Chelsea’s radar is one which will go down in the ‘what if’ category.
