Why Enzo Maresca feels 'ashamed' after Chelsea's 2-2 draw with Qarabag in the Champions League

Chelsea couldn’t get the job done against Qarabag, and a dejected Enzo Maresca faced the media after a disappointing Champions League night.

Chelsea have about 5,000 miles of a trip back to Stamford Bridge, and it’s not likely to be an enjoyable one.

The performance from Chelsea against Qarabag left a lot to be desired, and gives Maresca plenty to discuss ahead of Wolves at the weekend.

After the game, Maresca spoke to the press and seemed to regret a decision he made with his lineup.

Enzo Maresca laments Romeo Lavia decision

As sickening as drawing to Qarabag is, seeing Romeo Lavia hobble off the pitch yet again was equally disheartening.

Lavia’s Chelsea return was exciting. We all know the quality he possesses. But after eight minutes, he was forced off with an injury, and Maresca attributes some of the blame to himself.

As Football London report, the Chelsea boss was sad about the incident, saying: “Yeah, we feel very ashamed especially for him because he’s not able to be fit for a long, long period.

“We will see now as it’s too early to understand what kind of injury. Hopefully it’s not a big injury.”

The injury is to Lavia’s quad, and it’s too early to know if it will be as devastating as his previous ailments. Some Chelsea fans are already resigned about Lavia.

But Maresca shouldn’t place blame anywhere. It’s just one of the crueller aspects of football.

Maresca once again refers back to the Club World Cup

Chelsea’s triumph at the Club World Cup won’t be forgotten any time soon.

Obviously, because of the magnitude of the achievement, but also because Maresca’s squad is still feeling the effects. It was a somewhat leading question posed to the Italian about the possible hangover, but he was in agreement.

As he explains: “We have players, the intention tonight was to rest Enzo [Fernandez], to rest Moises [Caicedo], to rest Malo [Gusto], to rest more players, because they are not able to play every three days.

“They need recovery from last season, as you said, the Club World Cup affects a lot.”

If Maresca could go back to the summer tournament, it’s unlikely he would do things any differently. Silverware is the aim for any manager who comes to Stamford Bridge.

But the injuries Chelsea have had to deal with this season — Lavia, the latest — have made things difficult. Thankfully, Cole Palmer should be back for Chelsea’s next Champions League game against Barcelona.
