Chelsea have just made Premier League history by sacking Enzo Maresca as manager

It didn’t come as a massive surprise for Chelsea fans to wake up to the news that Enzo Maresca had left his role as manager of the club.

The decision has come off the back of a very poor December in terms of results, following a November where Maresca was named Premier League Manager of the Month.

Marc Cucurella has already said his goodbyes on social media to the Italian, with the manager’s influence on the left-back over the past two seasons clear to see.

Chelsea fans have been unimpressed with the decision to sack Maresca, especially when they are just a few days out from a huge game against Manchester City.

The swift nature of the decision following the draw against Bournemouth earlier this week now means the Blues will have a new manager in charge for 2026, despite Maresca’s impressive record.

The fact that he was sacked on New Years Day is actually a piece of Premier League history in itself. According to OptaJoe, it is the first time that a manager has been sacked on the opening day of the year.

The original plan was for Maresca’s position to be reviewed at the end of the season, bringing up two years in charge of the club.

However, the wavering relationship between the Italian and the board was having an impact on results on the pitch, and the decision was made with half a season to go.

Maresca’s potential replacements

At this stage, Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior is the frontrunner to take over the job at Chelsea, after his successful start to life at another BlueCo club.

However, Strasbourg will need a new boss first before Chelsea raid their partner club, with that being an important decision based on how the model works.

Porto manager Francesco Farioli has been linked with the club after his excellent season in Portugal, with a number of other names already out of the running.

Cesc Fabregas is not under consideration, while Oliver Glasner is also not in the frame to take the job at this stage.
