Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall admits he felt ‘useless’ when he played for Chelsea
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s time at Chelsea only lasted a season, and he has now admitted that there were times he felt ‘useless’ at Stamford Bridge.
The midfielder joined the club from Leicester City straight after manager Enzo Maresca had made the move to Stamford Bridge.
The majority of Dewsbury-Hall’s starts came in the Conference League, and even though the Blues triumphed in that competition, it was not enough to convince him to stay.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall felt ‘useless’ at Chelsea
He got his move in the summer to Everton, and has now admitted to the Mail Online that he felt ‘useless’ when he wasn’t playing regular minutes in West London.
He said: “I had a lot of options but signed for Chelsea genuinely thinking I was gonna play. I believed I could. I know I could. And then football is football. Things happen.
“Obviously the competition was high. Rival midfielders were £100m players (Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez). It was a strange dynamic at times. It was quite fortunate for the club that the manager could field two very strong teams.
“But it was weird – it almost felt like no matter how well I played in midweek, I would not play at the weekend and that was the only thing that didn’t sit well with me. In football it’s important, if you’re playing well, that you get the chance to play. I’m a very emotional guy. If I’m not playing, I feel useless, basically. I feel like I haven’t got a purpose because that’s my life.
“So yeah, there were dark times where I thought, ‘I don’t care about money or anything else. I just wanna play football, so why aren’t I?’.”
Dewsbury-Hall enjoying life away from Chelsea
Since leaving the club, the midfielder has been enjoying regular football again as part of the Everton side under David Moyes.
Dewsbury-Hall believes he has become a better player since leaving Chelsea, and his record on the pitch suggests that is true.
He has five Premier League goals to his name so far this season, after a campaign where he didn’t score a league goal for the Blues.
The move has worked out best for everyone, with Chelsea promoting and reaping the rewards of Andrey Santos as a regular in the first team squad.
