French newspaper: Joao Pedro awful but one Chelsea player as good as Ousmane Dembele

While L’Equipe is famously stingy with its player ratings, the French outlet couldn’t help but acknowledge that Chelsea possessed a player who went toe-to-toe with the world’s best in Paris, but didn’t hold back on Joao Pedro’s display.

Chelsea haven’t kept a clean sheet in over a month, with their last coming against Championship side Hull City in the FA Cup. Just three clean sheets in Liam Rosenior‘s 16 games in charge is slightly worrying.

And conceding five against Paris Saint-Germain was a wake-up call for the Chelsea boss.

The issue lies at centre-back and in the goalkeeping department, as Jamie Carragher pointed out. And it’s all down to the lack of stability in these positions; it’s constantly chopping and changing.

However, the focus for the French media was on two of Chelsea’s more attacking players.

L’Equipe’s player ratings for Chelsea’s defeat to PSG

Kieran Gill shared an image on his X account of L’Equipe’s newspaper release the morning after the game that saw Chelsea lose 5-2, and there are some interesting ratings.

Joao Pedro was given a 3/10, the second-lowest rating of any player, alongside Wesley Fofana, which seems harsh when he didn’t seem to do an awful lot wrong.

Meanwhile, Filip Jorgensen was given a 2/10 for his errors on the night.

Elsewhere, Enzo Fernandez was the pick of the bunch for Chelsea, earning a 7/10. The highest of any Blues player and second-highest overall alongside Ousmane Dembele.

Other ratings were as follows. Cole Palmer (5), Pedro Neto (6), Reece James (5), Malo Gusto (6), Marc Cucurella (4) and Trevoh Chalobah (4).

Enzo Fernandez scored and assisted for Chelsea in their defeat to PSG. As well as this he only had 50 touches, made 29 of his 37 passes, created two chances, made three tackles, two interceptions, six recoveries and won five out of his 10 duels.

Meanwhile, Joao Pedro had one of his poorer games, but it still wasn’t atrocious. He won just six of his 18 duels, was fouled three times, made one tackle, two recoveries, had 46 touches, made 68% of his passes, and failed all three of his dribble attempts.
