Paul Merson reckons Chelsea's owners would love to appoint English manager at PL club

Since the sacking of Liam Rosenior, all the talk has been on his potential Chelsea replacement in the summer and Paul Merson has thrown Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe into the mix.

Rosenior was sacked on Wednesday morning and it leaves Calum McFarlane in caretaker charge. His third game as a manager in professional football will be an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley against Leeds.

But come the summer, Chelsea will have to appoint a replacement. The likes of Andoni Iraola, Edin Terzic, Cesc Fabregas and plenty more names are being touted. Chelsea could even consider Antonio Conte.

Another that could come into the frame is Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe. There is talk of Howe stepping down at Newcastle at the end of the season, after a difficult campaign with The Toon.

Paul Merson thinks Chelsea would love to hire Eddie Howe

Strongly touted as England’s next manager, Howe has starred as Newcastle manager. While he has had money to spend thanks to Newcastle’s Saudi ownership, he has guided Newcastle into European football.

Not only that, but Howe also ended Newcastle’s long wait for a trophy with the League Cup last season. Amid the noise of Howe leaving Newcastle, Paul Merson suggested Howe could be Chelsea’s next boss.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson suggested Chelsea’s owners would love to hire Howe: “Chelsea would take him tomorrow morning. People will be queueing up to take Eddie Howe, he’s a top manager.”

What do Chelsea reportedly think of hiring Eddie Howe

It is believed that when hiring their next manager, Chelsea would like to bring in a manager with Premier League experience. Prior to their hiring, Chelsea’s last two bosses had not managed in England’s top tier.

This time around, Chelsea’s owners want to hire a manager with Premier League know how. Well, Howe certainly ticks that box. He’s clocked up 365 Premier League games, almost the equivalent of 10 seasons.

Reports say that among the Chelsea hierarchy, Howe has admirers at Stamford Bridge. Whether he does leave Newcastle and whether Chelsea choose to hire the former Bournemouth man remains to be seen.
