Report: Enzo Maresca's reason for leaving Chelsea has just been proven right

Enzo Maresca concluded that his coaching reputation faced more long-term risk by remaining within the Chelsea hierarchy than by walking away from the project entirely.

Enzo Maresca guided the club to a historic UEFA Conference League title and secured the FIFA Club World Cup, but even that wasn’t enough. His debut season also saw a return to Champions League qualification, providing the BlueCo project with its first taste of silverware.

However, as is often the case with Chelsea managers, things went downhill as issues within the club forced Maresca into a corner.

Since his departure, Maresca has strategically distanced himself from the dugout, biding his time as a primary candidate to succeed Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

But it seems that his exit was a calculated move to preserve his reputation rather than overseeing a decline that has only worsened since his departure.

Enzo Maresca got out whilst he could at Chelsea

According to TalkSPORT, Enzo Maresca felt his reputation would have been more damaged staying at Stamford Bridge than walking away in January.

Maresca’s personal stock has arguably never been higher. By leaving with his reputation intact and two trophies on his resume, he has avoided the slump now associated with the current regime.

Currently the frontrunner to succeed Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, Maresca’s move is increasingly viewed as a masterstroke of career preservation.

He correctly identified that the internal instability at Stamford Bridge would eventually undermine any coach, which is now seeing Liam Rosenior suffering.
