Report: Who Chelsea actually view as the better defender out of Josh Acheampong and Mamadou Sarr

In Josh Acheampong and Mamadou Sarr, Chelsea have two very promising defenders.

Neither has been a regular at Chelsea this season, with Liam Rosenior barely using the latter despite the club recalling him from loan in the January transfer window.

But the future still appears to be bright for both players. Out of the two, though, the Blues rate one higher.

Chelsea rate Josh Acheampong higher than Mamadou Sarr

According to the Daily Mail, Acheampong is higher in Chelsea’s thinking than Sarr, who did not do himself any favours in the Champions League last 16.

The 20-year-old was given an opportunity in a huge game for Chelsea, starting in the second leg of their last 16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain.

After losing the first leg 5-2, Rosenior’s side had little chance of making it to the quarter-finals. However, whatever slim hopes they had were quickly dashed out of the window after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was able to capitalise on a mistake Sarr made in just the sixth minute.

Since then, the Senegal international has barely been seen. Instead, Rosenior put his trust in the likes of Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana and Jorrel Hato before being sacked.

Under Calum McFarlane, Tosin Adarabioyo has also been given an opportunity, starting in the FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United last Sunday.

What Chelsea could do with Josh Acheampong and Mamadou Sarr this summer

Chelsea may rate Acheampong quite highly, but that does not change the fact that he has not played regularly for them this season.

With that in mind, you would expect both him and Sarr to leave the club on loan in the summer. Acheampong may even fancy a permanent move, given some of the sides who have shown interest in him.

According to journalist Simon Phillips, Manchester City have already made an enquiry about Acheampong.

It could be a huge summer for Acheampong, who is a popular figure at Stamford Bridge. Supporters will not want to see him depart, especially for a rival, but he has to think about his career.
