Wayne Rooney names the England player who should’ve been dropped for Cole Palmer at the World Cup
Thomas Tuchel has decided to not select Chelsea’s Cole Palmer for England’s 2026 World Cup squad, although that is a decision Wayne Rooney disagrees with.
Tuchel admitted there were some tough decisions to be made, particularly in the number 10 role. Phil Foden and Morgan Gibbs-White were also left out.
Chelsea’s decision to manage Palmer’s minutes this season has stopped him getting into a rhythm, and ultimately led to him having a summer off.
Wayne Rooney thinks Cole Palmer should have been picked for England over Noni Madueke
While this will be perfect for Xabi Alonso, Palmer, as well as Levi Colwill and Trevoh Chalobah, will be gutted to not have the chance to represent their country.
Wayne Rooney questioned the decision made by Tuchel, and was asked on the Wayne Rooney show whether he would have picked Palmer over Noni Madueke.

He answered: “Cole? I would, yeah, but that’s a call he’s made. And if you look, it hasn’t fared too badly for Arsenal this season. Having Saka and Madueke is back up.”
Madueke has been crowned a Premier League champion in his first season since leaving Stamford Bridge, vindicating the decision in his own mind.
While starts have been hard to come by when Bukayo Saka has been fit, his move clearly has paid off for his personal ambitions.
Palmer needs time to recover
Even when he has been playing for Chelsea this season, Palmer has struggled to look like his old self since recovering from injury earlier in the campaign.
After featuring at the Club World Cup, European Championship and U21 European Championship in consecutive summers, it has been a long time since he has been allowed a proper rest through the off-season.
He will now have the opportunity to join up with Alonso when he takes over on July 1 before the pre-season tour to Australia and Asia.
Alongside Colwill, Joao Pedro and a recovering Estevao Willian, Chelsea will have a strong set of players immediately taking on board Alonso’s tactics.
