What the English media are saying about Reece James’ performance vs Costa Rica

In England’s final warm-up game before the World Cup, Thomas Tuchel put out a strong team, which included Chelsea captain Reece James.

James played just over an hour of football before being replaced by Tottenham Hotspur’s Djed Spence.

After being impressed with James’ previous display against New Zealand, here is how the English media reacted to his latest outing.

Chelsea defender Reece James impressed media in England’s win against Costa Rica

It is fair to say that the English media were once again satisfied with James’ performance for the Three Lions.

The Daily Mirror handed the Chelsea star a 7/10 match rating and said: “Strong and ready, he was always well positioned and is clearly England’s first choice right-back.”

Another newspaper, the Daily Star, also handed James a seven. Their explanation for doing so was: “Solid and prepared, he consistently positioned himself well and is evidently England’s top choice at right-back.”

There is now no doubt that James will get the nod when England take on Croatia in their first World Cup game next week.

The best player at the Inter&Co Stadium, though, was Anthony Gordon, who caused absolute mayhem down the left flank.

Gordon sent Chelsea a painful reminder of what he is capable of, with the Blues having been interested in him before his move from Newcastle United to Barcelona.

Reece James can play even better

James clearly impressed those who watched him, but Chelsea supporters have seen their skipper have much better games.

Compared to what he has produced in a Chelsea shirt, you can even argue that James was pretty quiet against Costa Rica.

The 26-year-old was not involved in too many attacks and did not really have to do much defending.

It will be a different story against Croatia, who have enough quality to cause England’s defence problems. But James will be up to the task. He always is.

After that, the Three Lions take on Ghana. As the team’s first-choice right-back, James is certain to start that game as well.

Following the disappointment of missing out on the Qatar World Cup, hopefully he can have a good tournament.
