Report: Chelsea ready to let 33-year-old leave this summer, they've already signed his replacement

Reports have claimed that Chelsea are willing to let Cesar Azpilicueta leave the club at the end of the season.

According to The Telegraph, the club captain is one of the players the club will allow to leave West London, alongside Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

It was highly expected that the 33-year-old was going to leave the club last summer, as part of a defensive exodus at the club.

Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Marcos Alonso all left the club, making moves to the top two teams in Spain.

Azpilicueta was close to joining them, but the club simply couldn’t sell another defender, especially one to cover for Reece James and his injury concerns.

It has been a mostly unimpressive season for the Spain international so far though.

Azpilicueta set to leave

He has been unable to fill the void left by James when he has been injured, with Graham Potter often looking elsewhere for his cover.

This perhaps leans into why The Telegraph have reported that they are okay with him leaving after more than a decade with the club.

The future of the right-back role is certainly in good hands. With James obviously there, they will have the impressive Malo Gusto competing for minutes when this campaign comes to an end.

The youngster was one of the many January signings who joined the club, although Lyon were able to secure his services for the remainder of this season.

However, he suffered an injury a few weeks ago which is set to keep him out for some time. He has even travelled to London to complete his recovery due to the club’s superior training facilities.

Azpilicueta’s service to the club will undoubtedly be remembered a long way past his limitations this year, with him winning every club trophy available in his time here.
