'Always practising': Graham Potter names Chelsea's new designated penalty taker after Jorginho's exit

Chelsea manager Graham Potter revealed that Kai Havertz has been appointed as the team’s new designated penalty taker to replace Jorginho.

Following the UEFA’s decision to abolish the away goals rules in two-legged ties in their competition, penalty shoot-outs have become a more likely possibility.

This could be the case in the tie between Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund, with the latter having a one-goal advantage from the first leg.

Potter said his players are ready if Tuesday’s game goes to penalties. Oh, and Chelsea also have their new main man for spot-kick duty.

“The boys are always practising penalties,” the manager said in his pre-match press conference on Monday.

“We are prepared for that eventuality.

“We want to get it done before that but if not then okay, we can go through that way.

“Kai is our designated penalty taker now.”

Jorginho’s excellent successful penalty rate proved crucial for Chelsea in the last few years. He even led Chelsea’s goalscoring chart in the league in 2020/21 with his seven penalty goals.

Impressively, Havertz has never missed a penalty, although he has only taken 14 penalties so far in his career (per Transfermarkt), so it is a rather small sample size.
