'A candidate': Club would demand compensation for manager who could replace Graham Potter at Chelsea - journalist

Chelsea would have to reach an agreement with Bayern Munich over compensation fees if they were to appoint Julian Nagelsmann to replace Graham Potter, according to reports in Germany.

Bayern announced the decision to part ways with Nagelsmann in March and appointed former Blue Thomas Tuchel as their new manager.

Nagelsmann has since been linked with several clubs already, including Chelsea.

According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, there is no indication of the 35-year-old’s imminent move to Chelsea, but he remains on their shortlist.

“Potter under pressure and Nagelsmann is a candidate in case [Graham] Potter should be dismissed,” the journalist wrote on Twitter.

“Important to say: Bayern would demand a transfer fee!”

How are Bayern demanding compensation for a manager they just fired?

We do not know the details of Nagelsmann’s contract with Bayern, but as previously reported by BILD, since there was no mutual agreement for his departure, he is technically still an employee at the club.

Nagelsmann signed a five-year contract with Bayern in 2021, so unless there is a clause that says otherwise, he is tied with Bayern until the summer of 2026.

The Bundesliga champions also reportedly paid compensation worth €25million to RB Leipzig to sign Nagelsmann, so it makes sense that they would want to recoup their expense from the young manager’s next club.

Interestingly, Chelsea also paid a similar fee when they brought in Potter from Brighton earlier this season for a reported £21.5m.

Obviously, unlike these two previous cases, Nagelsmann is effectively out of work, so Bayern would likely accept a lower fee.

Bear in mind that, based on Bild’s report, they are still paying Nagelsmann his salary, so allowing Nagelsmann to join a new club as soon as possible is the most sensible option financially.

Update: Chelsea have confirmed on Sunday that Potter has departed the club.
