Report: The joke Chelsea players were making in private about Graham Potter just before he was sacked

Reports have claimed that Chelsea players continued to joke about Graham Potter and his name just before he was sacked as manager.

According to The Independent, the squad never really took the Englishman seriously, with him now being removed from his role just months into his tenure.

Defeat at the weekend to Aston Villa saw the Blues drop into the bottom half of the table, a scenario which Todd Boehly and co could no longer defend.

This is despite Potter being given plenty of time and backing since he took over from Thomas Tuchel late last year.

It was perhaps only the performances and results in the Champions League that had kept the former Brighton man at the club for as long as he stayed. A big comeback victory over Borussia Dortmund saw the Blues book their place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

However, the poor results being achieved with the quality of players at his disposal made it impossible for Potter to remain at the club.

It appears that the players were never completely sold on the project either, and continued to make Harry Potter references regarding the man in charge.

The lack of respect will have made things very difficult for the manager to get the best out of his big-money players, and suggests a big character may be needed to get the squad back in line.

A number of figures have been reported to be of interest from Chelsea for the job. Ruben Amorim and Oliver Glasner are two in current jobs in Europe who the club are a big fan of.

While there are a number of roadblocks in the way at this stage, it does seem that the favourite for the role is former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann.
