‘Been trying’: Chelsea have wanted to sell £70m player for years now, clubs just can’t afford him - journalist

Journalist Nizaar Kinsella has claimed that Chelsea have been trying to sell Kepa Arrizabalaga for a number of years now.

He told the ‘London is Blue’ podcast that the Blues will struggle to offload the goalkeeper to anyone other than the elite sides in world football.

It has been somewhat of a bounceback season for Kepa this season after it seemed that his career at Stamford Bridge was going to come to an end with a whimper.

As soon as previous manager Graham Potter came in to the club, he decided he was going to favour the Spain international instead of Edouard Mendy.

The Senegal man had established himself as one of the best in Europe during his early years at Chelsea, when he was crowned the best in his position by Europe.

However, he has hardly seen the pitch in 2023, with a rare appearance against Nottingham Forest recently not convincing anyone to bring him back yet.

While Kepa has been playing a lot more, he has hardly been setting the world alight. Many are still mindblown that a deal was done for over £70m a few years ago.

Kinsella has now claimed that the Blues have actually been trying to get rid for a number of years now, however have had no luck.

He said: “Chelsea have been trying to sell Kepa almost every transfer window. The only clubs that can afford to buy Kepa are the 5 richest English clubs, Real Madrid & PSG. I don’t think any club will pay Kepa what Chelsea are paying him.”

A goalkeeper is reportedly on the agenda for this summer as one of a few signings, with the likes of Andre Onana and David Raya linked with the move.
