Report: Some football insiders now suggest Chelsea wanted to appoint 'excellent' manager more than Pochettino
Reports have claimed that it is universally accepted by people in football that Mauricio Pochettino was not the first choice to take the job as Chelsea manager.
According to the Mail Online, it is believed that Julian Nagelsmann was the club’s first choice to take over from Graham Potter at the helm.
Yesterday it was finally announced that Pochettino was going to become manager when next season gets underway, just 24 hours after their 2022/23 campaign finally came to an end.
The appointment will surely bring optimism back to a fanbase who has lacked it for a long time now, following a 12th place finish in the Premier League this season.
The recruitment process took a long time, with Todd Boehly likely very cautious to not repeat the same mistakes that occurred this season with regards to who is in charge.
However, this meant that a number of other candidates were mentioned as potentially being the one chosen to take the role.
Chelsea actually wanted Nagelsmann
Nagelsmann was one of the names strongest linked with a switch to West London, with the timing of the vacancy combining well with his own sacking at Bayern Munich.
He was in turn replaced by former Blue, Thomas Tuchel, who secured a Bundesliga triumph at the weekend from under the nose of Borussia Dortmund.
With some claiming the ‘excellent’ coach was the first choice for the job, it perhaps explains why it took so long for an announcement to come.
During this time of uncertainty, club legend Frank Lampard was tasked with the near-impossible job of trying to take the Blues to the end of the season with any real success.
There will be hopes this hasn’t seen too many backwards steps taken with regards to new contracts for certain players, with Mason Mount and N’golo Kante two of the Blues potentially on their way out.
