20-year-old should now stay at Chelsea after pre-season, he can learn off ‘world-class’ player – opinion
Last night saw Chelsea play their third friendly of the hectic pre-season campaign in the United States, as they drew 1-1 with Newcastle United.
Nicolas Jackson’s second goal in as many games gave the Blues the lead, before they were pegged back by Miguel Almiron’s first half strike.
It was a mix of experience and youth for Mauricio Pochettino again against Eddie Howe’s side, with the majority of players on the pitch putting in a good shift.

One of the younger players who was utilised from the start was Bashir Humphreys, who completed an inexperienced centre-back pairing with Trevoh Chalobah to take on a first choice Newcastle front line.
However, it was another impressive showing by the youngster, who is seemingly looking to play his way into Pochettino’s thinking ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Humphreys should stay at Chelsea
Centre-back is a position the club look short in going into next year right now, with Wesley Fofana being ruled out for most of the season already with a serious knee injury.
With signings only being linked tentatively at this stage, there could be an opportunity arising for the 20-year-old to spend the season with the first team.
It is likely to also be Thiago Silva’s last season at the top level, despite age still not showing any signs of catching up to him right now.

This would therefore mean it is likely the last chance for any of the youngsters at the club to learn anything from the Brazilian.
His quality is undeniable at this stage, with Pat Nevin describing him last season as ‘world-class’.
Humphreys won’t be the only member of the first team looking to learn what they can from Silva either. Levi Colwill is now looking forward to his first campaign as a member of the Chelsea squad.
