‘I know’: Declan Rice makes claim about what was happening to Mason Mount before he left Chelsea
Declan Rice has claimed close friend Mason Mount was going through “a tough time” at Chelsea before exiting Stamford Bridge this summer.
A lot of Chelsea fans were left heartbroken this summer when Mason Mount, 24, completed a permanent transfer to Manchester United.
The Blues academy graduate has been the poster boy for the club in recent years, but he ended up completing a £55million transfer (Sky Sports) earlier this month to Old Trafford.
Every Chelsea supporter will have been closely following the Mount saga for months regarding a potential new deal in West London.
However, we’ve now got to wish him well in Manchester and move on from the attacking midfielder.
Declan Rice, who himself made a high-profile transfer this summer from West Ham to Arsenal, has given some small insight into Mount’s exit.
“I read loads of bits that me and him (Mount) were speaking, and people were saying we would always end up at the same club; it wasn’t like that at all. I’ve got to do what’s best for my career. Mase has got to do what’s best for his career. We never really had that chat,” Rice told ESPN.
“I know he was going through a tough time at Chelsea with a few things, and of course I was there for him. He was there for me, but my situation was very different compared to his.
“I spoke to him the other night after the game (Arsenal vs Man United), he’s so happy to be at United.”
It’s extremely disappointing that it had to end on a sour note with Mount, who left a Champions League winner and a two-time club player of the season.
The Guardian reported last month that Mount’s relationship with Chelsea deteriorated in the past year.
Meanwhile, The Sun claimed back in May that Mount’s agents were very unhappy with Chelsea after their efforts during negotiations for a contract extension.
Eventually, it was best for all parties to move on.
It’s certainly going to be interesting to see how the Blues cope in this new era without him, with Mauricio Pochettino now steering the ship as the head coach.
