Report: Todd Boehly now considering keeping promise and going back to sign £43m player for Chelsea

Reports have claimed that Chelsea are now again considering signing Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez this summer.

According to The Times, they have added the Mexico international to their list for if they are forced to look elsewhere in their pursuit of a midfielder in this window.

Chelsea fans will be familiar with Alvarez, after their late attempts to sign him last summer on deadline day.

The 25-year-old even skipped training in an attempt to force through his move to Stamford Bridge, with a fee of around £43m being discussed in the final hours.

However, things didn’t work out in the end, and instead it was an uneventful loan spell with Denis Zakaria that Thomas Tuchel was forced to work with for the few days before he was sacked.

At the time, it was reported that the owner, Todd Boehly, had promised Alvarez that they would return with an offer for him, however their priorities seemed to move on to other players such as Enzo Fernandez and now Moises Caicedo.

Attempts to sign the Ecuador international this summer have been well-documented, with a number of bids being rejected up to now for his services.

This could see them look elsewhere this summer, and could see Boehly return to the promise he made the Ajax man almost a year ago.

With us now in the month that the Premier League season returns, any additions being made to Mauricio Pochettino’s squad will need to be swift in order for them to get the requisite time with the squad to impress and prove they can be important players going forwards.
