'9/10', 'Class act': Local media blown away by 20-year-old Chelsea loanee's display last night

Chelsea loanee Mason Burstow enjoyed his best performance to date in a Sunderland shirt last night.

Mason Burstow, who’s just 20, is on a season-long loan at the Stadium of Light trying to prove himself at first-team level.

The young English striker is still yet to score in his first four appearances for his loan club, but he was instrumental for them on Friday night.

Sunderland jumped up to fourth in the Championship table yesterday thanks to their eye-catching 3-0 win away to Sheffield Wednesday.

Burstow assisted one goal with a long-range switched pass. He won his side a penalty, too.

Local media graded Burstow’s individual performance a 9/10 on a memorable Friday night.

The Chelsea loanee must be desperate to get on the scoresheet himself as a centre-forward, but it’s very encouraging to see him gelling into this Sunderland line-up so quickly.

Sunderland Echo wrote: “No goal but a huge step forward for the Chelsea loanee, who looked a real class act throughout. Sprung Clarke clear for the second goal with a brilliant switch of play, and won the penalty for the third was a lovely turn. A threat throughout and linked the play well, too. Probably the player of the match. 9.”

The Championship has been a brilliant playground for so many Chelsea youngsters in recent years, so let’s hope Burstow develops well this year and pushes into the first-team squad at Stamford Bridge next season.

The Evening Standard claimed in the summer that Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino was thinking about keeping Burstow this campaign after he impressed in pre-season. However, we think Sunderland is the perfect temporary home for him during the next nine months.

This Sunderland team is attack-minded and scoring a lot of goals, so it should only be a matter of time befre Burtow jumps in on the act.
