‘A possibility’: Fabrizio Romano says Chelsea may now try and sign £43m player next summer

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Chelsea may make a move next summer to try and sign Lyon winger Rayan Cherki.

He took to YouTube to state that there were no real discussions this summer, with both parties not picturing the move taking place.

Cherki has endured a rough start to the season as part of a Lyon side who currently sit bottom of the table in France.

A video recently went viral that saw the leader of the supporters group at the club dressing down the players, with the camera focusing on the winger for much of it.

Reports over the summer stated that he may have been close to getting away from it all, with him a target for top teams.

Cherki could be a target next summer

One of those who were seemingly interested were Chelsea. It was well known that the Blues were keen to sign an attacking profile at numerous stages of the window.

Talk of a deal saw a price of £43m being quoted as what the club would have to pay in order to sign him.

However, Romano has now claimed things weren’t close to fruition, although there is a chance they make a move next summer.

He said: “Chelsea have monitored Cherki but he was not considered a target this past summer, also because the player did not want to move this past summer but to move in 2024, is a possibility.”

The Blues in the end made a move to sign Cole Palmer on deadline day, with them highlighting his versatility as a reason why they brought him in.

Despite only making a cameo appearance against Nottingham Forest, he looked promising and that he could bring something special to the club.
