'He looks exciting': Manager admits he's been blown away by 'fast and direct' 20-year-old Chelsea loanee

Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray has immediately been blown away by the quality of Chelsea loanee Mason Burstow.

Mason Burstow, who’s just 20, made a few appearances at the start of this campaign for Chelsea. He did complete a season-long loan move to Sunderland on the summer’s deadline day, though.

The young striker’s development will continue this year at Championship level with a side that hold promotion hopes.

It’s going to be very interesting to see how the Chelsea-owned forward copes in the second tier.

Burstow is yet to actually make his Sunderland debut, which could change this afternoon away at QPR.

However, the youngster’s already earning some rave reviews from his new manager about what he’s done on the training pitch.

“He is a really nice, humble boy,” Mowbray said, as quoted by the Sunderland Echo.

“To be honest, the balls were getting net rash the first day he was here because he did not miss. It was flying in, it was unbelievable.

“He looks exciting. He’s a humble kid, almost shy, who is just smashing it in the net. That’s not meant to put pressure on him, that’s just the reality of his first training session, he must have scored 50 goals in an hour.

“He looks exciting, fast and direct. He’s got hunger, he chases around and works hard. He wants to score.”

Journalist Gianluca Di Marzio previously reported on X that Burstow could emerge as a potential target for Italian giants AC Milan. He did end up completing a loan move to the Stadium of Light, but it says a lot that a switch to the San Siro was mentioned.

We’ve got a lot of belief that Burstow could become a real favourite in Sunderland colours and score a lot of goals.

On top of being a clinical finisher, he’s got the kind of physical attributes defenders hate.
