'It's huge': £23m new Chelsea signing admits he's been shocked by Mauricio Pochettino
Chelsea midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu has explained why Mauricio Pochettino has made a really positive impression on him so far.
Lesley Ugochukwu, who’s just 19, completed a move from Rennes to Chelsea during the summer transfer window.
The French teenager cost the Blues £23million (BBC), which they’ll hope turns out to be a bargain as he develops.
It’s certainly interesting to see he’s come straight into the first-team squad and is starting to get minutes already.
Ugochukwu has shared that Chelsea’s head coach has been great with him so far. In fact, he was shocked that Pochettino remembered coaching a Paris Saint-Germain side against him when he was just 17.
It’s these small personal touches from Pochettino away from the cameras that show why he’s rated as a great man-manager.
“Things are going very well with the coach,” Ugochukwu told Le Parisien.
“You should know that my first start at Stade Rennais was against him. He was at PSG and spoke to me about it as soon as I arrived with the group in the United States. He looks at his assistant and says to him: Do you know that because of him we don’t win the championship? It’s huge that he remembers that. I was 17 and I didn’t expect him to remember at all. We went 1-1 and Paris finished one point behind Lille that season.
“He has really given me a lot of confidence since my arrival. He tells me to let go of the horses, to have confidence in myself, that if I am here it is because I have the qualities.”
The Daily Mail reports that Chelsea midfielder Romeo Lavia could be sidelined through injury for up to six weeks.
If that’s true, Ugochukwu should be positive of some more first-team minutes in the immediate futue.
