'That's enough to knock you': Rio Ferdinand fears Gareth Southgate is destroying Chelsea player's confidence

Former England defender Rio Ferdinand is worried about Levi Colwill’s confidence after Gareth Southgate’s decision to start Harry Maguire over the Chelsea star last weekend.

Maguire was included in the Three Lions’ team for their recent 1-1 draw with Ukraine despite having barely played for Manchester United this season, and Ferdinand thinks that could have a negative impact on the likes of Levi Colwill and Fikayo Tomori.

Speaking on his YouTube channel FIVE, the United and England legend said: “You’ve got Levi Colwill coming through, young player, and I was that young guy once. If there are people in my way who aren’t playing in front of me, I’m thinking, ‘Right, he obviously doesn’t rate me.’

“And if it’s only a smidgen of a percent, that’s enough to knock you off your game confidence-wise when you go to an England camp because you’re sitting there training and thinking, ‘I know he doesn’t rate me because the proof’s in the pudding.’ “

While the 20-year-old did not feature in the game against Ukraine, he has another chance to play for England when they take on Scotland tonight.

It would see Colwill win his first senior cap for the Three Lions.

Levi Colwill could replace Harry Maguire

If Maguire continues to be a bench player at United, Southgate will not be able to keep picking him, especially going into Euro 2024 next summer.

The 30-year-old is just not going to have the same kind of match sharpness as Colwill and Tomori, who are both starters for Chelsea and AC Milan respectively right now.

Eventually, you would expect Maguire to be dropped, at least from England’s first XI, which could give Colwill the chance to come in and replace the former United captain.

It is a long season, though. Perhaps Maguire can win a spot at Old Trafford, while Colwill loses his at Chelsea.

However, as things stand, it does not look like either will happen. But if you are an England fan, it is certainly something to keep an eye.
