Report: Pochettino set to ruthlessly axe Chelsea man with ‘no confidence’ vs Aston Villa

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is set to axe Mykhailo Mudryk from his starting line-up when Aston Villa travel to Stamford Bridge in the Premier League this Sunday.

That is according to football.london, which reports that it is unlikely that Mudryk retains his starting spot. Pochettino awarded the 22-year-old an opening role at AFC Bournemouth last weekend. But the Ukraine dynamo could not impress as Chelsea had to settle for a 0-0 draw.

Pochettino even saw enough from Mudryk on the south coast to hook the winger after only 63 minutes. He made way for Cole Palmer, who has still only featured as a substitute for the Blues. The 21-year-old left Manchester City for up to £42.5m to transfer to Stamford Bridge.

The trip to Bournemouth also marked Mudryk’s first start in the Premier League this season. Pochettino only introduced the attacker as a substitute against Liverpool, West Ham United and Nottingham Forest. But Mudryk did not show enough at Dean Court to retain the place.

Chelsea are still yet to see Mudryk score a single goal since his move from Shakhtar Donetsk this January. The winger’s pace proved to be his main asset once again at Bournemouth. But he could not offer much more than win a handful of free-kicks whenever he burst in behind.

Mudryk has ‘no confidence’ at Stamford Bridge this season

Mudryk’s decision-making was questionable throughout his hour of action at the seaside. It would have been oh so different had the forward delivered some quality in the final third to retain a starting spot. But Pochettino did not feel his quality came through regularly enough.

Now, it is likely to be one and done with Pochettino primed to axe Mudryk from Chelsea’s XI against Aston Villa on Sunday. But doing so may not help Mudryk to improve his confidence. Darren Bent, for one, has felt the forward has already lacked self-belief at times this season.

“He’s got no confidence whatsoever,” talkSPORT pundit Bent said earlier in September. “He can’t get a run of games. He’s got no confidence at the minute.”
