‘Spectacular’ player who Chelsea wanted this summer has now been benched by Blues loanee

Last night saw Chelsea loanee Diego Moreira make his first start for Lyon since making the move on loan this summer.

His appearance on the right for the struggling Ligue 1 side did come at the expense of the highly-talented winger Rayan Cherki.

Chelsea were reportedly interested in signing Cherki this summer as they looked for reinforcements across the attacking line.

He had a stellar time at the U21 European Championships, where he began to alert several big clubs of the talent that had been bubbling away for some time in France.

Cherki has been described as ‘spectacular’ by French media for his performances, and was on the radar of the Blues over the summer.

However, reports claimed that they were looking elsewhere for their attacking reinforcements, and instead looked towards another direction.

They prioritised instead trying to bring in Michael Olise from Crystal Palace, and even activate his release clause.

Despite this, it later emerged that he was instead going to sign a new contract to remain at Selhurst Park.

Instead, the Blues ended up with the addition of Cole Palmer instead from Manchester City, who is hoping to start his first game of the season for the club.

One player who in the future who could take the role is Moreira, who the club signed for free over the summer in a shrewd acquisition.

He impressed during his appearances on the club’s pre-season tour of America, and earned himself what looked on paper like a strong move to Lyon on loan.

While the club are struggling this season, new manager Fabio Grosso seems to have a belief that the Blues loanee holds the key to their return to form.
