'Obviously garbage': £35m Chelsea signing now admits his time at the club didn't work out

Former Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater has now claimed that he did not have a good time at Stamford Bridge during his time here.

He told Jake Humphrey’s High Performance podcast that things did not go as planned, with his tough times beginning the moment he joined the club.

Today saw Drinkwater announce his retirement from professional football, putting an end to his career which has seen a number of highs.

What should have been one of his big highs was his time at Chelsea, with him getting a move 12 months after winning the Premier League with Leicester.

The plan was for him to reform his midfield partnership with N’golo Kante, who had won the league himself in his first campaign at the club.

However, things didn’t really go to plan, and he endured a tough time in Blue.

Now, Drinkwater has claimed that from the very first day things were a bit strange at Stamford Bridge.

He said: “As a whole it was obviously garbage but if you break it down I had some unbelievable times there. Not unbelievable but really good. The first day was madness.

“It was left Leicester, deal hadn’t been done, and from what I know I don’t think Leicester planned to get it done. Drove down there with my agent and a few other people, was in a hotel for the majority of the day, and then we got an extension on the deadline because it wasn’t done in the time.

“I remember Michael [the director of football at Chelsea], it was like 1am in the morning, was shouting down the corridor ‘let’s get this deal done’ and all this and I’m sat there thinking ‘what’s going on?’”

While things didn’t work out in West London and his career fell off as a result of this, the former Blue can look back with pride on a good career in the game.
