'I tell you': Alan Shearer makes his prediction over where Chelsea are going to finish this season now
It was another disappointing weekend for Chelsea, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side losing 2-0 to Brentford in the west London derby.
And Premier League legend Alan Shearer, speaking on The Rest Is Football, has now predicted whether the Blues will finish in the top four or not.
Pochettino’s men have left themselves with a lot of work to do. They currently sit 11th in the table, 11 points behind fourth-placed Liverpool.
To make things worse, Chelsea have another extremely difficult Premier League fixture next, another London derby, this time against league leaders Tottenham Hotspur.
Alan Shearer’s Chelsea prediction
After their latest defeat, Shearer thinks Chelsea have no hope of finishing in the top four this season.
Discussing the Blues on The Rest Is Football, the former Newcastle United striker said: “I tell you who won’t be getting in the top four, Chelsea! They were really poor. Poor in the final third.
“They are now talking about [Christopher] Nkunku being back with him being injured but he’s not really a centre forward is he, so that is going to put unnecessary pressure on him. If anyone had Chelsea in and around the top four, I don’t see that happening at all.”
Will Chelsea finish in the top four?
No. It is as simple as that. There are obviously still a lot of games left to play in the campaign, but this Chelsea side are just not convincing.
The return of Nkunku could help and Pochettino says the French forward may actually be back soon.
However, by the time he is ready to play again, Chelsea’s Premier League season could already be over. The Blues are already 11 points behind the top four and have to play Tottenham and Manchester City next. That gap could be about to get much bigger.
There is a chance that fifth place may be enough to qualify for the Champions League, but if Pochettino’s side keep dropping points at home, they are unlikely to finish any higher than 10th.
At this point, we would say Chelsea should not even be thinking about Europe’s elite competition. A Europa League spot is probably the best the Blues can hope for. But again, the 2021 Champions League winners are just about on course for a top-half finish.
