'Pulling the strings': TalkSPORT pundit compares Chelsea star to James Maddison during today's 2-0 loss
Scott Minto compared Chelsea star Cole Palmer to Tottenham’s James Maddison during his performance earlier today.
It was a disappointing Saturday for Chelsea, who suffered a 2-0 loss at home to Brentford in the Premier League.
However, Blues youngster Cole Palmer was a rare positive on a frustrating afternoon.
The 21-year-old playmaker looked a creative threat for the hosts at Stamford Bridge, picking up some really clever positions from a No 10 position.
Speaking via Football London straight after the Brentford defeat, Chelsea head coach Pochettino did give immense praise to Palmer for his general impact.
James Maddison similarities
TalkSPORT pundit Scott Minto boldly compared Chelsea’s young talent to in-form Spurs star James Maddison, who’s been one of the division’s best players so far this season.
Maddison, 26, look at the peak of his powers right now as the creative link for a Spurs side top of the league table.
Now, Minto believes Palmer is the Chelsea equivalent as their main creator.
“Palmer is bossing this game right now,” Minto told talkSPORT (12:55pm, 28 October).
He later added on talkSPORT (1:46pm): “Cole Palmer, what a ball he just put in there that no one could quite get on the end of. To give him a real big compliment, we talked about James Maddison in the pre-show; he’s almost the James Maddison for Chelsea with the way he’s pulling the strings.”
Cole Palmer stock is rising
Chelsea certainly need more from certain players in their squad right now, but it’s been refreshing to watch Palmer’s impact in the past couple of months.
We much prefer him in central pocket compared to wide positions when his movement is a little bit more restricted.
He’s still got a little way to go to reach Maddison’s consistent heights, but we’re pretty confident he can get there soon enough if he carries on the way he’s going.
With Chelsea’s side usually struggling at the top end of the pitch, Palmer’s got the potential and ability to grow into the team’s best threat.
