'Sources are fearful': Real concerns that £75m Chelsea player could miss rest of the season - journalist

Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana may not return to action this season.

That is according to journalist Simon Phillips.

Wesley Fofana underwent anterior cruciate ligament surgery in the summer and Phillips, writing on his Substack Si Phillips Talks Chelsea, says “sources are fearful” that the 22-year-old will not play a game this term.

Injuries have been a problem for Fofana at Chelsea since he made his £75m move from Leicester City in 2022.

Last season, the Frenchman was only able to make 15 appearances in the Premier League for the Blues.

Wesley Fofana’s injury

Fofana’s injury is obviously a serious one, with the France international doing damage to his ACL.

It is really not a shock, then, that he could be out for the remainder of the campaign. It would be a blow to Mauricio Pochettino, but the Argentine at least has options in Fofana’s position.

Thiago Silva, Axel Disasi, Levi Colwill, Benoit Badiashile and Trevoh Chalobah can all play in central defence.

Of course, Badiashile and Chalobah have also been out injured, but their problems are not as serious as Fofana’s and the former could be back soon.

According to football.london, the former AS Monaco man has done a bit of team training during this international break, suggesting that he is closing in on a return to action.

The Arsenal game this Saturday may come too soon for Badiashile, but when he is available again, it could be massive for Pochettino, especially with Fofana’s season now potentially over.

Considering that, hopefully Badiashile can stay fit after he makes his comeback.
