'His only option': Journalist now claims £60m player had no choice but to leave Chelsea
Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount had no choice but to leave Chelsea in the summer.
That is according to journalist Ben Jacobs.
Mason Mount joined United from Chelsea in a £60m deal over the summer and Jacobs has told GiveMeSport that it was his only option in the end.
The attacking midfielder is yet to make much of an impact at Old Trafford following his move there, failing to score a goal or provide an assist in four Premier League outings.
Mason Mount had to join Manchester United
According to Jacobs, United’s offer was the only thing Mount had on the table in the lead up to his transfer to Erik ten Hag’s side.
“Mason Mount didn’t really have a Chelsea option at the time he chose to join Manchester United,” the journalist said. “I think he’ll have regrets at the manner in which he left Chelsea, but I don’t think he’ll have regrets at joining Manchester United because, in many ways, it was his only option.
“There was nothing active there on the Chelsea side to counter the Manchester United offer. It did feel like, when he finally moved to Manchester United, Chelsea were very much in selling mode.”
Mason Mount not in England squad
It has been a difficult start to the season for Mount, who has now lost his place in the England squad.
Simply put, his move to United has not gone to plan so far, but it is early days. You would expect things to improve.
As for Chelsea, they look to have replaced the 24-year-old with Cole Palmer. The England U21 international is an attacking midfielder just like his compatriot and has really come to life in a blue shirt recently.
He played a key role in Chelsea’s 4-1 win against Burnley in the last round of Premier League fixtures, scoring during the encounter at Turf Moor.
If Palmer keeps playing the way he has been, we think the Stamford Bridge faithful will quickly forget about Mount, if they have not already.
