Conor Gallagher says £110k-a-week Chelsea star is a 'massive leader' without wearing the captain's armband
Conor Gallagher explains that Chelsea teammate Thiago Silva is a huge leader on the pitch, even without the captain’s armband.
With such a young Blues squad at Stamford Bridge right now, there’s a lot of intrigue around who’s emerging as the senior figures in the dressing room.
Reece James filled the vacant role as club captain this summer, with Ben Chilwell his vice-captain. We’ve actually seen Conor Gallagher step into the role as stand-in captain at times this season, too.
If you’re looking for experience in the squad, Thiago Silva and Raheem Sterling stand out as head and shoulders above their teammates.

Silent leader
Gallagher has given a special mention to the impact of Silva on the Chelsea side.
Despite being 39 years of age, Silva has played in every single Premier League match so far this season. Remarkably, the £110,000-a-week centre-back (Spotrac) is still such a vial player in the squad.
Blues head coach Mauricio Pochettino gave a nod to the future by rewarding James with the captain’s armband, but we’re not surprised to hear Silva still has a big influence.
Gallagher said via The Telegraph: “Reece James has been one of Chelsea’s best players in recent years when he’s been fit and he’s come through the academy, so he got the armband. You could say Thiago Silva but everyone knows he is a leader that doesn’t need an armband, he’s still a massive leader on the pitch himself.”
Thiago Silva the class act
When you’ve achieved the career that Silva’s had in football, you certainly don’t need to scream and shout to lead by example. Instead, we’re sure that this young group is looking towards the Brazilian every single day for advice and tips.
Writing in his column for The Sun a few days ago, Harry Redknapp argued that Silva is still currently Chelsea’s best player. He’s definitely still in the conversation for that!
The centre-half keeps setting the standards with his professionalism on and off the pitch. It’s worth remembering that he joined on a free transfer back in 2020, which is one of the club’s best ever deals.
It’s a dream scenario for Blues defender such as Levi Colwill, Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile to learn from Silva on a day-to-day basis.
