'Helped me a lot': £110k-a-week Chelsea star suggests he's feeling much fitter under Pochettino
Chelsea centre-back Thiago Silva has suggested that he’s feeling a lot fitter this season.
Interestingly, he’s put a lot of that down to Mauricio Pochettino’s influence.
Thiago Silva, who’s now 39, is the oldest outfield player in the Premier League this year.
The Brazilian defender continues to defy logic by putting in stellar performances during his fourth campaign at Stamford Bridge.
It’s amazing to hear that the £110,000-a-week veteran star (Spotrac) is feeling fitter, too!

Chelsea’s own Benjamin Button
You do have to stop and pinch yourself sometimes when you remember that Silva’s now into his late thirties.
The South American star has been given a fresh lift by Blues head coach Mauricio Pochettino, who arrived in the summer with the reputation of a great man-manager.
“Pochettino has helped me a lot with my fitness. Not that I was complacent but I was in my comfort zone. It looks like everything is fine, and it feels fine, but he managed to get me out of that area,” Silva told The Guardian.
Thiago Silva future
Silva will be turning 40 next year and his Chelsea contract is up next summer.
He’s currently starring in the Blues line-up and holding his own, but surely this is his last season in west London?
Journalist Simon Phillips has recently reported via his Substack that there’s a “possibility” that Chelsea could sell Silva in the New Year.
We’d like to see the veteran defender see out the rest of the 2023/24 season, with his wisdom around the building so valuable to the youngsters.
It’s going to be intriguing to see who Pochettino selects as his preferred centre-back combination with several talented players in the running for two spots.
Silva is competing for his starting position alongside the like Levi Colwill, Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi. There’s also Wesley Fofana and Trevoh Chalobah out on the injury table right now.
The fact that Silva has played every minute so far this season in the league is a sign that he’s still in pole position in Pochettino’s mind.
