National team manager's use of 24-year-old shows Chelsea were right to sell him this summer - opinion

It seems like no one knows what Kai Havertz’s best position is, with the forward still playing in different roles following his exit from Chelsea during the summer.

Arsenal signed Kai Havertz from their London rivals in the last transfer window and, like his managers at Stamford Bridge, Mikel Arteta has played him in different areas on the pitch.

And now Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann has followed suit but has taken things one step further.

Kai Havertz’s role against Turkey

In a shock to many, Nagelsmann decided to start Havertz as a left-back against Turkey last night in quite a bizarre move.

It initially looked to have paid off as Havertz got forward and scored a goal. However, it pretty much went all downhill after that.

The 24-year-old gave away a penalty towards the end of the match as Germany went on to lose the game 3-2.

Simply put, it was not Havertz’s best outing and really epitomised the problem Chelsea had with him. They just could not find a position for him to thrive in.

Germany match justifies Chelsea’s decision to sell Kai Havertz

It does not matter how often he was allowed to get forward or what specific role Nagelsmann had for Havertz. A £65m attacker (BBC Sport) playing at left-back is insane.

His versatility in general does have its pros and that is probably one reason why Arteta decided to bring the Germany international to north London.

But the fact that we are at a point now where Havertz has been used in defence really shows Chelsea were right to sell him and did extremely well to get £65m, which is basically what the former Bayer Leverkusen man cost them.

Havertz mainly played as a striker for the Blues, but he was never a prolific one for them, scoring just seven goals in 35 Premier League appearances for his old side last season.

Nicolas Jackson has since come in for half the price and is already on six league goals this term.

Todd Boehly has been criticised for a lot of things since he took over the club. But selling Havertz should not be one of them.
