'So calm': Conor Coady says 21-year-old Chelsea player has done so well over international break so far

Leicester City defender Conor Coady has praised Cole Palmer after the Chelsea star made his England debut on Friday.

Cole Palmer won his first senior cap for England after coming off the bench in the 2-0 win against Malta and Conor Coady, speaking on Football Daily, said he fully expected the 21-year-old to play well.

It was a bright cameo from Palmer, who skilfully got past a couple of Malta players during one bit of play.

He will now be hoping to make his first start for Gareth Southgate’s side when they take on North Macedonia tomorrow.

Conor Coady impressed with Cole Palmer

Coady has liked what he has seen from Palmer so far both at club and now international level.

Discussing his promising cameo against Malta on Football Daily, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers captain said: “I fully expected it seeing the confidence he’s playing with at Chelsea at the minute.

“We’ve obviously seen his goal and how he played last weekend in the big game against [Manchester] City and I fully expected it as well because he comes across as so calm and how he plays, but I thought he done really, really well and it’s a proud moment for him and his family.”

Should Cole Palmer start against North Macedonia?

Based on his current form, yes. And looking at how England played in their victory over Malta, it really would not hurt Southgate to include the attacker in his first XI.

They just lacked a bit of creativity in the game at Wembley, something Palmer brings to the table.

For example, according to WhoScored, the former City man made four key passes in Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Brentford last month. It was the most in the game and quite an impressive stat.

Had the Blues’ finishing been better on the day, one of those chances could have easily been converted and made it a completely different game.

England have nothing to lose by starting Palmer Monday evening. Some of their other attackers, the likes of Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish, are not in the best of form at the minute. Palmer is probably more worthy of a start, but Southgate will have his own way and the Chelsea man may have to wait a bit longer before he makes his full debut.
