'Hard to find a way past': Rob Edwards admits Luton found it tough playing against £110k-a-week Chelsea man

Luton Town were able to score two goals against Chelsea yesterday, but their manager Rob Edwards still had high praise for one of the Blues’ defenders.

Chelsea initially went 3-0 up thanks to goals from Cole Palmer, who managed to grab a brace, and Noni Madueke.

However, Luton fought back in the second half and made the score 3-2. Mauricio Pochettino‘s men really wobbled towards the end of the game, but despite conceding twice, Edwards said in his post-match press conference (via talkSPORT) that it was still really tough to play against Thiago Silva.

Despite now being 39, Silva has been a key player for Chelsea this season and actually did impress in the win at Kenilworth Road.

According to WhoScored, he made a whopping 10 clearances, more than any other footballer on the pitch that day.

Hard to find a way past Thiago Silva

Edwards says it is not easy going up against a player like Silva.

In his post-match press conference, the 41-year-old said: “I think the performance was brilliant, though. I know they went 3-0 up, so that’ll probably change people’s perception a little bit, but we were incredibly brave.

“It was difficult to find a way through and really create much in the first half when the game’s still maybe a little bit tighter. They’re defending very well and they’re really good players. It’s hard to find a way past people like Thiago Silva. It’s difficult.”

Thiago Silva still a top defender

Silva is obviously not getting any younger, but he remains a solid defender, with his performance against Luton showing just that.

The Brazil international, who earns £110,000 a week at Stamford Bridge (Spotrac), was hailed as “amazing” by Pochettino after the game, and it is not hard to understand why.

Silva’s contract expires in 2024, so Chelsea could lose him at the end of the season. But with the former Paris Saint-Germain captain still performing, there is no reason to let him go.
