'He's really strong': Mauricio Pochettino admits he's been super impressed by 19-year-old Chelsea prospect

Mauricio Pochettino admits Chelsea youngster Alex Matos has caught his eye for all the right reasons.

Alex Matos, who’s aged 19, is a young prospect that only moved to Stamford Bridge in the summer from Norwich City.

The attacking midfielder’s quickly become an important player in the Blues Under-21s side this campaign.

In addition, Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino has rewarded the highly-rated teenager with two first-team appearances so far.

Matos made a Premier League debut with a late cameo against Fulham in October. Similarly, he came off the bench last month when Chelsea beat Blackburn Rovers in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

“To compete with the first-team players is tough. But he’s really competitive, he’s really strong. He’ll kick you and smile at you.

“It’s nice to have this type of profile. I’m happy with him. There’s some massive talent in the academy in all the different teams.”

It should serve as a huge boost to Matos to hear Pochettino speak publicly about him in such glowing terms.

The English talent now needs to keep his feet firmly on the ground and working hard to impress whenever he’s around the first-team environment.

In the know account The Secret Scout previously reported on X that Matos is a battling central midfielder that is highly regarded by Pochettino. It looks like they were bang on the money with this one.

We’re delighted to see that there’s still a desire from Pochettino to look inside the club towards the players in the academy sides. There should always be a platform from the U21s to the main group if you’re good enough.
