'It's ludicrous': TalkSPORT pundit can't believe what Chelsea ownership could be about to do with 23-year-old

Despite being a key player for them, Chelsea could sell Conor Gallagher next month.

As his contract continues to run down, Conor Gallagher has been heavily linked with a move away from Chelsea.

For talkSPORT presenter Sam Matterface, it is utter madness that the Blues are even considering selling the 23-year-old.

Gallagher has only missed one of Chelsea’s Premier League games this season, their 2-1 defeat to Manchester United, because of suspension. It just shows how important he has been to Mauricio Pochettino.

Chelsea selling Conor Gallagher would be ludicrous

Matterface cannot understand why Chelsea’s ownership would consider selling Gallagher.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “It’s ludicrous, really, isn’t it? It’s ludicrous to think that this is a player who Pochettino obviously thinks is essential to the team because as soon as the rumours started to swirl, even in the August transfer window that he might be sold elsewhere, he made him the captain.

“He’s kept him as the captain in the absence of Reece James. He’s always worn the armband. Clearly he wants him to stay, clearly he thinks he’s important. So why on earth are the ownership now trying to or being prepared to sanction the sale?”

Chelsea need to sell other players first

Given that Gallagher has been a key player for the Blues this season, it is kind of crazy that he seems to be at the top of their sale list.

Of course, there are advantages of selling the Englishman compared to other players. Having come through the club’s academy, Chelsea can make 100% profit on him, which will look good on the FFP books.

However, if there really is a need to make money, then they really should be looking at parting ways with other members of Pochettino’s squad first. Take Ian Maatsen, for example, who has made just one start in the Premier League this term.

Unfortunately for Pochettino, though, it looks like Gallagher may be the first one out of the door when the January transfer window opens. The Argentine has admitted himself that there is nothing he can do about the situation.
