‘Nervous’: 30-year-old striker admits he was unsure about joining Chelsea when he did

Former Chelsea striker Patrick Bamford has now claimed that he was not sure about joining Chelsea when he did.

He told the ‘My Mate’s a Footballer’ podcast that he was extremely nervous about moving away from home at the age of 18.

Bamford was unable to register a first team appearance for Chelsea during his time at the club, with it lasting from 2012 until 2017.

The best time he had as part of the Blues was with the Under 21s, where he found the net on a consistent basis.

He was instead the victim of numerous loan moves away, with him excelling for sides such as Norwich City, Middlesbrough and Crystal Palace.

While it was not until he left the club that he found true success with Leeds United, he has now come out and claimed that he actually had a lot of hesitation over joining the club.

Bamford scared of joining Chelsea

He said: “I think I was just nervous and like ‘what’s going on’. The whole time I’m thinking ‘what’s going to happen here’. Did all the medical stuff first, and spoke to Jim Fraser who was joint head of the Chelsea academy. I spoke to him and he sold it to me.

“They showed a progression pathway, how they wanted me to develop as a young player and stuff. I had that chat, and had a chat with my dad and my agent, and I was like ‘I’m not sure if I wanna do it’.

“Because I’ve never left home. The young kid in me was [scared]. But if things don’t work out at Chelsea, you fall from a higher ledge.”

Chelsea’s current striker situation is currently leaving them with more questions than answers, with them reportedly looking to enter the market again in an upcoming transfer window.
