‘No excuses’… Chelsea fans now say Mauricio Pochettino simply has to start 21-year-old vs Sheffield United now

Chelsea host Sheffield United tomorrow in what feels like another significant game in their season.

The Blues are quickly sliding down the Premier League table with recent results, so they desperately need a victory on Saturday at Stamford Bridge.

It’s interesting to hear that a selection of Chelsea fans are calling for Ian Maatsen to be handed his first league start of the campaign.

They’re adamant that the 21-year-old should be in from the start versus Sheffield United.

Chelsea fans want Ian Maatsen at LB

A selection of Chelsea supporters on social media say that Maatsen should be playing this weekend.

In fact, they’ve gone one further by insisting he plays at left-back.

The youngster’s played his football so far this season further up the pitch as cover for the wide positions, but let’s not forget he was excellent at full-back during last season’s loan spell at Burnley.

Chelsea confirmed via their official website today that left-backs Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella are on the club’s long injury list.

Some Blues fans think it’s a no-brainer for head coach Mauricio Pochettino to respond to that by playing Maatsen at left-back.

Incidentally, Pochettino suggested today that Maatsen has struggled so far this season (Football.London).

Supporters react

Chelsea fans have rallied on X to strongly argue Maatsen’s case ahead of the Sheffield United game.

One supporter said: “With Cucurella and Chilwell both injured I really hope Ian Maatsengets a few chances at left-back in the coming weeks. Colwill can’t play every minute out there.”

Another wrote: “Would be really nice to see Maatsen at LB (left-back) tomorrow.”

A third claimed: “Malo Gusto at RB and Ian Maatsen at LB this weekend and we could possibly cook.”

A fourth added: “Start Ian Maatsen at LB tomorrow.”
